Champions League Semis Far from Madrid- Mourinho

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on April 22, 2014

Chelsea will attempt stamping their authority on the Champions League last-4 tie with La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night when they visit the Spanish capital city.

The Blues, which advanced into the semi-finals courtesy of a breathtaking 2-0 comeback against Paris Saint-German in the previous round, will be happy to be playing tonights away leg first at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Having reached this stage of the competition on seven previous occassions, two of whom came as the Stamford Bridge outfit manager, Jose Mourinho downplays the impact of the first leg being away from home.

Jose Mourinho Refused to Comment on Atletico Madrid During His Press-Briefing at the Pitch Side of the Vicente Calderon.

It is difficult for a Champions League semi-final to be decided in one game, Mourinho opined during his pre-match media briefing on Monday evening.

It happens sometimes but it is difficult to have a result in the first leg that kills the emotion of the second leg.

I dont know if there is an advantage really. I like to play without thinking too much about it being the first leg away or the second leg away. The first game is here and we know Atletico Madrid will do everything to win the game, but it doesnt matter too much where you play the game.

Atletico, managed by ex-Argentina international Diego Simeone, is a club all too familiar with the Portuguese boss, owing to his three-year previous spell at neighbours Real Madrid.

Mourinhos side came top in the first three meetings between Real and Simeones Atletico in the Primera division before losing last seasons Copa del Rey to the same club.

Atletico, the only side left in the Champions League to not have lost a match and to have won every game at home (including the 1-0 last-8 win over Barcelona), were victorious in the Europa Cup, same year (2012) Chelsea lifted their maiden European Cup. When they both met in the Super Cup the following year, the Los Roji-Blancos prevailed.

I am not here to talk about the qualities of Atletico Madrid, Mourinho responded, when asked for his thoughts on his next opponents.

I did that with my players yesterday, I do it today and will do it tomorrow, and it is with my players I have to share my feelings about Atletico. Of course no team arrives in the Champions League semi-final without being a very good team and they are no exception. Atletico is a team that we respect, study and analyse.

I have watched Atletico play a lot of times and from the moment we got them in the draw Ive watched them play with better eyes, and Ive studied them a lot to try to be ready to make my players understand what Atletico is.

Tonights occasion holds special memories for Spanish striker Fernando Torres, a sensation at youth level who broke into the Atletico first team aged 17 and was captain at 19. With Samuel Etoo out due to a minor knee irritation, Torres may well be lining up against his most previous clubs this week, with next Sundays visit to Anfield on the card.

I am not saying that Fernando is going to start, but he never hides. And every day we talk about Spanish football and he is a real Atletico supporter, and I have no doubts that the minutes he is on the pitch tomorrow, he is going to try to do everything for Chelsea like the fantastic professional he is, said Mourinho.

However, the Special One wants to take every game one at a time ahead of a busy week for the Set London club, who are yet in the race for the Premier League title. Chelsea visits Madrid on Tuesday, play at Merseyside league table toppers on Sunday before hosting Atletico at the Bridge, in what has been described as another crucial moment in the clubs title ambition.

We are lucky to be involved in the Champions League and we dont need to think about the Premier League and what is going to happen. We only need to think about the big game tomorrow, added Mourinho.

If people want to speak about the Premier League now there are 19 other teams in England. Chelsea tomorrow is the Champions League and we are only speaking about the Champions League.

It is a Champions League semi-final against a team I know well, and I think every player and every manager wants to play this game.

Portugal-based Aruna Quadri has expressed optimism about Nigerias chances of clinching medals in table tennis at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, with the right support.

Quadri, who defied all odds to make the last 16 at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF)-sanctioned World Tour tagged Spanish Open, admitted that the attention giving to football is really affecting the fortune of other sports, particularly table tennis adversely.

We really need support and motivation as we are hoping that things must change in our countrys sports because priority is just being accorded to football, said Quadri.

Table Tennis is One of the Sports Nigeria Hopes to Clinch Its Medal in Glasgow.

For us in table tennis, things are not going well because we are not getting enough support which is putting us in difficult situation all the time. Most times, we spend our l money to attend competitions in order to be well prepared for the Commonwealth Games.

We really appreciate the financial support the President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Wahid Enitan Oshodi has been giving to us since January.

Quadri however pleaded with the National Sports Commission (NSC) to imitate their foreign counterparts, in ensuring players could get grants from the ministry to attend tournaments and allow them keep up to shape and maintain top form.

I wish to take part in more pro tours before Commonwealth Games but I need support and motivation, I have spent a lot on myself and I am in need of financial support to keep playing tournament regularly so as to be in good shape for Glasgow Games, he added.

On Nigerias chances at the Commonwealth Games in July, Quadri said: We stand a chance of winning medal in Scotland because at the Spanish Opens, we had five English players and five Indian players with one English and two Indians making it to the last 64. But as Nigerians, we were only two that took part in the competition and only one of us made it to the main draw (round of 64). England and Indian are not better than us at present, but because they are playing tournament regularly to keep improving. We also need support to be playing tournament regularly and with that, we can be doing so much better than before.

Dutch national team coach Louis van Gaal is the bookmakers favourite for the vacant Manchester United job.

United confirmed on Tuesday that player-coach, Ryan Giggs, will take charge of the Premier League job on the interim, pending the appointment of a permanent manager.

Van Gaal has reportedly told his friends he is very keen on succeeding David Moyes when his stint in charge of the Oranje runs out after the 2014 World Cup and the his involvement at this summers World Cup is believed wouldnt hinder United from considering him for the job.

Louis van Gaal Won Three Dutch Eredevise, The Dutch Cup, Champions League, Uefa Cup, Uefa Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup With Ajax.

The former Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Ajax coach has made no secret of his desire to coach a Premier League team after the World Cup.

A report on Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf, says the 62-year-old Netherlands coach had a meeting with United 10 days ago.

Van Gaals outstanding resumee, which includes wining league titles in holland, Spain and Germany, and his immediate availability, has impressed the Glazer family, owners of the Old Trafford outfit.

The Dutch boss has already held talks with Tottenham but his link with the White Hart Lane outfit is not expected to deter him from joining United if he gets an offer.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich and Borrusia Dortmund coaches, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, have moved to rubbish rumours linking them with the vacant managerial position.

The Daily Telegraph reports the Red Devils are set to make discreet moves to find out whether Pep Guardiola can be tempted away from Bayern.

I want to stay at Bayern on the long term. Bayern are my team, and I believe we can do even better, Guardiola said ahead of the clubs Champions League last-4 tie with Real on Tuesday.

Injuries Concludes the Premier League Season for Cech Terry

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on April 23, 2014

Chelsea skipper John Terry and goalkeeper Petr Cech are set to be sidelined for the remainder of the Barclays Premier League season, after the pair sustained injuries during the clubs Champions League last-4 first leg tie at Atletico Madrid.

Cech injured his shoulder while Terry limped off later, after appearing to land awkwardly.

Manager Jose Mourinho says its over for the Czech Republic goalkeeper, as far as the ongoing campaign is concerned, while Terry stands the chance to feature at the Lisbon final on May 24- should the Blues scale the La Liga leaders hurdle in next Wednesdays return leg at the Stamford Bridge.

Peter Cech Broke His Shoulder After Colliding With Raul Gracia During Chelsea Champions League Last-4 Tie Against Atletico Madrid.

Petr Cechs season is over, said Mourinho. Dont ask me to explain it technically, but its over. With John, well have to play in the final for him to play with us again.

The West London outfit are five points behind leaders Liverpool in a league title run-in left with three games before its all done and dusted and, having negotiated a goalless stalemate at the Vicente Calderon; would rather switch from Tuesday nights strong show of defensive proficiency to unleashing their attackers, yet conscious of their opponents frontmen.

They face a trip to Anfield this weekend, before hosting Norwich and plays the final game of the season at Cardiff on Sunday, 11 May.

Cech, 31, came off after just 18 minutes on the pitch, following a collision with Atleticos Raul Garcia and was replaced by Mark Schwarzer, 41, for his Champions League debut, Terry pulled up with 18 minutes left to the dead and was replaced by Andre Schurrle.

Also on the list of potential absentees for the semi-finals return leg are midfielders Franck Lampard and John Obi Mikel through suspension, after picking up second-half bookings.

Cameroon international Samuel EtoO (knee), Belgian playmaker Eden Hazard (calf) and Branislav Ivanovic (suspended) all missed the stalemate away from home and could return for the second leg. Mourinho believes Chelsea have the character and personalities to finish off the job.

Mourinho added: This result leaves everything even more related to small details for the second leg. We had problems before the game, during the game and lost four players, two with injuries and two with yellow cards, but we will fight.

Ivanovic is back, Schwarzer showed we can trust him. People that arent playing a lot, like Ashley Cole, gave an amazing performance. If we have to play the kids we will. Before, Atletico spoke about the game of their lives, now the game of their lives is at Stamford Bridge.

Everybody did a great job. A tired David Luiz, after playing in midfield, stepped back and played in central defence for the last 20-25 minutes, which wasnt easy. For Ashley to play this type of game after so many games not playing, was amazing. Mikel, Lampard and Torres were immense. Every player gave everything and Im obviously very pleased.
